Overflowing joy

“In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability.” 2 Corinthians 8:2-3

Walter and Maria walked up to the worksite like they had every other day before. We had developed a strong bond with these neighborhood kids. Normally they were so lively we were not able to keep up with their energy. This day was different. They just sat there, smiled at us, and said only a few words. We knew something was wrong. Our compassionate translator stooped down and had a conversation with Maria (the older sister). As it turned out, these kids were hungry. It had been several days since either of them had any food. Our fearless leader and translator made a quick trip to the tienda to get food and groceries for their family. They returned with some fresh fruit. Maria and Walter graciously accepted the food and even offered it to each of us at the jobsite. Their “extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity”. I myself struggle with sharing food when I’m full, let alone starving. Walter was not even done with his fruit before he grabbed me by the hand and demanded I spin him around in circles once again. “Otro vet, otro vez!!” he shrieked. In the midst of starvation, “their overflowing joy” welled up inside each and every one of us. This joy had nothing to do with our efforts to feed this child. I know they were still hungry. No, this is the joy that only the Lord Jesus can supply. Some may look at this and think that we changed their lives. However, each one of us who experienced this joy knows that they changed ours. I’m envious of them.

The world views these people as “poor”, but oh, are they rich! They are rich in joy. This joy is not based on their circumstances, rather their love from Jesus. They are rich in generosity. I have never received so many genuine thank yous. They are rich in humility. They look to the needs of others before themselves. Aren’t these all things that Jesus calls us to do because he knows it produces complete joy in our lives. I’m convicted. I want to live more like these children. They have demonstrated the genuine love of Christ and I am eternally thankful. I wish I could return the favor. Our team was blessed beyond measure to build a house for our beautiful family, to provide education for brighter futures, support several projects to better the lives of those who better their country, and much more. Without hesitation, the people who poured into us “gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability.” They poured into our eternity. I pray we have as much of an impact on their lives as they do on ours.
