Life is Like a Tortilla
Life’s like a tortilla. You never know what you’re gonna get.
Seriously y’all, making tortillas isn’t for the faint of heart. However, corn tortillas are a staple in almost every Guatemalan meal. The women joke saying that if you can’t make a round tortilla then you aren’t ready to marry. Sorry David. While making tortillas, Carmelita and Marina would laugh and shake their heads but allow me to put my cracked, too thick, odd shaped tortilla in the midst of their perfection. After all, that is their daily bread and they will want every possible tortilla, no matter what it looks like. I think that is how God looks at us too. We think that we have to be some perfect, well put together Christian for us to be useful. I am the first one to be discouraged around a room full of “perfect” Jesus loving girls. We beat ourselves up because “we aren’t good enough”. All the while, God is just giggling throwing us back out there as long as we are willing to try again. The truth is, we will never have it all together, we will never get to rewrite the perfect story but someone needs what you have. Someone needs your broken, messy story. We just have to trust in who God is and not what we are. Thankfully Mrs. Gump also told Forrest, “You have to do the best with what God gave you.” and “Don’t ever let anybody tell you they’re better than you.”
Thank you Guatemala for loving this hot mess and eating my terrible tortillas. You have shown me a beautiful example of God’s Grace and character.
